Welcome to the Blessed Month of Muharram

As the sun sets at Maghrib, we welcome the blessed month of Muharram and the beginning of a new Islamic year.

Muharram is one of the sacred months in Islam. It is a time for reflection, renewal, and drawing closer to Allah through worship, good deeds, sincere repentance, and renewed intentions. The beginning of a new Islamic year reminds us that time is a gift from Allah, and every new day is an opportunity to return to Him with a heart full of hope, gratitude, and obedience.

A Sacred Month of Great Virtue

Muharram holds a special place among the months of the Islamic calendar. It is a month in which Muslims are encouraged to increase in righteousness, avoid sins, and make the most of the opportunities for reward.

Among the greatest acts of worship in this blessed month is fasting, especially on the Day of ‘Ashura and the White Days.

Fasting on the Day of ‘Ashura

The Day of ‘Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram, is a day of great virtue. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged fasting on this day and mentioned its great reward.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Fasting the day of ‘Ashura, I hope that Allah will expiate thereby the sins of the previous year.”
Sahih Muslim

This beautiful hadith reminds us of Allah’s immense mercy and generosity. A single day of fasting, performed sincerely for the sake of Allah, can become a means of forgiveness for the sins of the previous year.

It is also recommended to fast a day before or a day after ‘Ashura, such as the 9th and 10th or the 10th and 11th of Muharram.

Fasting the White Days

Another blessed Sunnah is to fast the White Days, which are the 13th, 14th, and 15th days of each Islamic month.

These days are a regular opportunity to revive the Sunnah of our beloved Prophet ﷺ and strengthen our connection with Allah through fasting, patience, and self-discipline.

In Muharram, fasting these days becomes even more meaningful, as they fall within one of the sacred months.

Make the Most of Muharram

As we enter this blessed month, let us make a sincere intention to fill our days with acts that please Allah. We can increase in:

  • Prayer and voluntary worship

  • Recitation of the Qur’an

  • Dhikr and du‘a

  • Charity and good deeds

  • Seeking forgiveness

  • Strengthening family and community ties

Muharram is not only the beginning of a new calendar year. It is also a reminder to begin again spiritually — to leave behind what distances us from Allah and move forward with stronger faith and better actions.

A Prayer for the New Islamic Year

May Allah make this new Islamic year a year filled with barakah, guidance, forgiveness, good health, strong faith, and steadfastness upon His obedience.

May Allah accept our fasting, forgive our shortcomings, bless our families and community, and allow us to enter this year with hearts that are sincere and actions that are pleasing to Him.

Ameen.
